What are we trying to improve?
The school facilities. £1,000,000 plus £54,000 Early Years money is available for a new build which includes two permanent Key Stage 1 Foundation Stage classrooms, hall, toilets. Feasibility study has been undertaken and various other negotiations are in process prior to submitting a planning application. Currently rather protracted negotiations are continuing between Oxfordshire County Council, the Parochial Church Council and the Diocese. When built this will enable us to offer opportunities in gymnastics, dance, indoor games, music and drama which currently we are unable to offer.
Additionally much more space and equipment to encourage:
- Unrestricted use of play for Key Stage 1 and Foundation Stage children.
- Further develop the curriculum by using as much of a topic based approach as appropriate and integrating ICT into our planning.
- Providing more 'hands on' opportunities for investigative science.
- Improve staff expertise in the use of the Interactive Whiteboard.

How have our results changed over time?
Results at both Key Stages have always been high, particularly with regard to the numbers of Level 3 at KS1 and Level 5 at KS2 gained. This culminated in 2003 and 2005 in 100% Level 5 in all three subjects.
Writing has improved most, 100% Level 5's in 2005
Boys and girls both achieve highly and there is no difference in attainment (OFSTED 2004)
"Special Needs pupils make good and sometimes outstanding progress" as stated in LA's Inclusion Team report.
Standards reached by learners by end of Foundation Stage, KS1 and KS2 judged exceptionally / consistently high after the LA's annual triangular review.
Back to topHow are we making sure that every child gets teaching to meet their individual needs?
By having high expectations of all pupils, thus ensuring they have high self esteem and positive attitudes to learning by the end of KS2.
By encouraging a school ethos which encourages positive behaviour in lessons, thus ensuring pupils are attentive and learning takes place for all children.
Rigorous procedures for tracking pupils' progress through National Curriculum subjects is in place.
Detailed analysis is undertaken, this informs strategic planning and / or teaching strategies.
Teaching Assistants are highly skilled and sensibly and sensitively deployed to support individual/small groups of children.
All staff are skilled, conscientious and committed to supporting children to attain as highly as they can. Both TA's have obtained HLTA status and are experienced and confident in working with children. Teachers and teaching assistants work closely together and as a small school there are frequent opportunities for informal planning and discussion.
How are we working with parents and the community?
We believe it is imperative for us to have effective links with both our parent body and our local community. We do this by:
- Trying hard to offer objective information about our school. Thus our OFSTED report, SAT's results, school newsletters have been published in the "Combe Courier".
- Ensuring that individual parental consultations take place twice yearly and each child receives a report which is discussed with the parent. Parents are encouraged to give feedback on the report, whether positive or negative and comments are acted on. Parents of SEN pupils are fully involved in the learning process and parents attend IEP review meetings.
- Sending out a regular questionnaire requesting parents to consider various aspects of school life. Rigorous analysis of the returns takes place and acted on.
What have pupils told us about the school, and what have we done as a result?
Older children expressed their desire for a school council, this has been implemented and is now a recognised forum for them to express ideas/opinions and to organise small fund raising ideas. This year for example they raised £750 as part of a Partnership charity initiative. Also continuing to raise money to support our Ghanaian children. Indoor board games and outdoor equipment have been purchased as a result of School Council requests.
A representative group of year 6 children spoke privately to the LA's Inclusion Team and were unanimous that they feel safe and secure in school and all interviewed pupils felt that staff are responsive to their concerns and that they are listened to and appropriate actions are taken.
How do we make sure our pupils are healthy, safe and well-supported?
We promote the development of a safe and healthy lifestyle through PHCSE, games and curriculum. Safety and possible dangers' are regular assembly topics. This is re-enforced by the Police and Firemen who are yearly visitors. Additionally Year 6 children participate in Junior Citizen, 'Safe Cycling', IMPS and a Relationship module.
A clear behaviour management policy and an anti-bullying policy is adhered to.
A 'healthy eating' fruit and vegetables scheme is available and encouraged.
Risk assessments are undertaken.
We have received awards for Health & Safety.
We follow all national and local guidelines for protecting children. All staff have received Safeguarding training.
How do our absence rates compare with other schools?

What do our pupils do after leaving this school?
Pupils move to a variety of secondary schools, both state and independent. Evidence supplied by receiving schools suggests a high level of satisfaction with both academic standards attained and social skills exhibited.
What have we done in response to Ofsted?
No key issues were stated except those connected with the building. Therefore much work has been done in our attempt to improve the building. This has resulted in a completed feasibility study for a hall and two permanent classrooms, negotiations for an extension of the lease of the school field from the Parochial Church Council/Diocese and meetings to consider a replacement area for the loss of part of the school playing field.
Play in the Foundation Stage is part of 2006/7 School Improvement Plan as is Investigative Science at both Key Stages. Much positive work is being achieved in both areas. Recently purchased science equipment will further aid the development of practical science, as did the science Day at Magdalen College and Abingdon Schools.
